Its traditional focus has been on polar and alpine regions, where effects of global change are especially pronounced. In recent decades, their research has broadened to include environmental challenges that span local, regional, and global scales. Research topics vary widely and include Quaternary and modern environments, human and ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, landscape evolution, hydrology, oceanography, and climate.

The IPROMO programme was conceived and organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UNESCO, within the framework of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, and the University of Turin (IT).

The IPROMO programme includes the creation of the "International Post-Graduate School for Mountains" located at the Istituto Angelo Mosso at Col d'Olen (Monte Rosa), Italy. The school, located in the middle of the Monte Rosa Massif (between the Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta regions), has an important historical value and a strong potential as a training site. Since 2008 the IPROMO programme is contributing to enhance knowledge on mountain conservation and development issues, with a specific focus on climate and global changes, encouraging cross-regional cooperation among high level technicians and decision makers involved in promoting sustainable mountain development in their own regions. The programme includes courses in the fields of natural sciences, forestry, socio-economics. The final objective is the training of students, researchers, technicians for the management of mountain areas, characterised by considerable ecological, social, economical complexity. Moreover, the aim is to provide scientific knowledge and to enhance the ability of participants to assess potential ecological and social impacts of different management policies.

The studies that are undertaken deal with ecological factors in mountain environments, more specifically in the Alps, and these studies can be grouped under one main theme "sustainable development in mountain areas". EURAC’s Research Area “Mountains” focuses on monitoring and assessing the interaction of environment and society in mountain regions, and works on strategies of sustainability in the Alps and other mountain areas.
