CONFERENCE SUBJECT
The National
Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A) and the
N.T.U.A. Metsovion
Interdisciplinary Research Center (M.I.R.C.) for the Protection and Development
of Mountainous Environment and Local European Cultures, following the proposal of the Committee
for the Connection of N.T.U.A. with Metsovon
and in appreciation of the success
of the first two conferences held in Metsovon in 1995 and 1998, organize the 3rd
INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERUNIVERSITY CONFERENCE OF THE NATIONAL
TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS, in spring 2001, at Metsovon Conference Center.
Through this Conference, N.T.U.A. once more acknowledges and honors the contribution of the benefactors from Metsovon to its establishment, operation and development and pays back a part of its debt to their homeland.
The subject of the 3rd Interdisciplinary and Interuniversity Conference of N.T.U.A. is "INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT OF MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS. THEORY AND PRACTICE.". The Conference aims to bring together the National Technical University of Athens, the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly and other Greek universities and to foster the development of initiatives for interdisciplinary cooperation, which apart from the theoretical analyses and contributions to the issues addressed by the Conference, will lead to specific applications relating to the Integrated Development of the mountainous regions of Greece and Metsovon Province in particular.
2. THE CONFERENCES OF
N.T.U.A. AND N.T.U.A. M.I.R.C. FOR METSOVON
The conferences of N.T.U.A.
and N.T.U.A. M.I.R.C. are held every three years, in Metsovon. They host:
Scientific, Research and Technical/ Technological contributions of scientists, graduate engineers and members of the Teaching and Research Personnel of the National Technical University of Athens, the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly and other Greek Universities to broader issues of Technology, Development, Environment and Culture, as well as to specific related issues of Metsovon, Metsovon Province and the region of Epirus.
The best graduate and postgraduate projects/ theses on Integrated Development by students of the National Technical University of Athens and the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly
Interdisciplinary and Integrated research into multidimensional modern
global issues relevant to the monitoring and the protection of Mountainous
Environment and Local Cultures and to the contribution of Education, Research
and Technology in the Integrated Development of mountainous regions.
3.
SPECIFIC ISSUES ADDRESSED BY THE 3RD CONFERENCE
The 3rd INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERUNIVERSITY CONFERENCE
OF THE NATIONAL
TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS
and N.T.U.A. M.I.R.C. will focus on the investigation of specific, highly
prioritized issues and the development of methods and techniques for their
confrontation. The faculties, departments, laboratories and interdisciplinary
research teams of N.T.U.A., the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly and other
Greek universities are asked to encourage relevant projects, papers and theses,
utilizing their educational and research potential until the date of the
Conference.
The theoretical contributions and specific applications to be presented in the Third Interdisciplinary Interuniversity Conference should aim to assist the development or the integration of methods, techniques, software and/or other scientific and technological innovations in the following interdisciplinary fields:
Improvement of the quality of life in mountainous regions.
Observation, monitoring, mapping, enhancement and protection of the mountainous (natural/socio-economic/cultural) environment in Metsovon, Greece, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, Europe (methods, new technologies, applications, policies).
Documentation, conservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of mountainous regions.
Improvement of housing, employment and production conditions in mountainous regions.
Cadastre, Regional Planning and Land Policy in mountainous regions.
Development of energy technologies, which are friendly to the human, natural and cultural environment, in mountainous regions.
Integrated and Decentralized (economic, social, political, technical/ technological and cultural) Development, in dialectic harmony with the environment and with respect toward it.
Local production of new materials and products, which are useful to human beings and friendly to the environment, in mountainous regions.
Contributions of new technologies to the production of new services, which are useful to human beings and their societies, in mountainous regions (Medical Technology, Tele-medecine, Tele- informatics, etc.)
Statistical, Bibliographical etc. Investigations, Documentations, Surveys, Processing and Theoretical and Critical Approaches to issues relevant to Integrated Mountain Development.
Metsovon Province as a pole for integrated decentralized, harmonious, scientific and technical/technological Development and Culture. Requirements, Possibilities, Prospects.
4. CONFERENCE
EXHIBITION
The Conference will host a
poster exhibition of student projects, graduate and postgraduate theses, as well
as studies, applications, projects and research of PhD candidates, engineers and
other scientists on technical, technological, developmental, environmental and
cultural issues relevant to Metsovon and its broader region.
The Committee for the Connection of the National Technical University of Athens with Metsovon, in cooperation with the Municipality of Metsovon, will provide accommodation, for a period of a few days, to students pursuing relevant research. The N.T.U.A. Rectorial Council will symbolically fund the students’ transportation costs and other small expenses (consumables).

AWARDS
The N.T.U.A. Rectorial
Council, following the proposal of the Committee for the Connection of N.T.U.A.
with Metsovon, has approved the announcement of 3 awards, each accompanied by a
prize of 300,000 GRD, for the best student project of graduate, postgraduate and
doctorate degree candidates of N.T.U.A. and the Universities of Ioannina and
Thessaly, on the following subject areas:
Protection and Integrated Development of Mountainous Environment. Utilization of the potential of N.T.U.A. and/or the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly and specific applications for the Protection of the Environment and the Integrated Development of Metsovon Province and its broader area.
Protection and Development of Local European Cultures. Utilization of the potential of N.T.U.A. and/or the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly and specific contributions to the Protection and Development of the Local Culture of Metsovon Province and its broader area.
Technological Activities, Innovations and Applications in the fields of Culture and Decentralization. Utilization of the potential of N.T.U.A. and/or the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly.
The projects may, following a generic theoretical introduction, examine each subject in the specific scientific-research-technological perspective of the specialties of their authors or their interdisciplinary teams, presenting methods, techniques, results, conclusions and proposals - in essay form, according to the guidelines to be provided in the 2nd Conference Announcement.
The Scientific Committee reserves the right to propose to the N.T.U.A. Rectorial Council an increase of the award prize by 200,000 GRD if the research team submitting the awarded project includes young PhDs of N.T.U.A. and/or the Universities of Ioannina and Thessaly.
The Conference Scientific Committee will serve as the projects’ Scientific Review Committee.
A Special Session of the Conference will be devoted to the presentation of the awards and the award-winning projects.
8. AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT FOR BEST CONFERENCE POSTER
The
N.T.U.A. Rectorial Council, following the proposal of the Committee for the
Connection of N.T.U.A. with Metsovon, has approved a competition for the best
poster of the 3rd Interdisciplinary and Interuniversity Conference of N.T.U.A.
for Metsovon, to be held among students of N.T.U.A. and the Athens School of
Fine Arts, with a prize of 150,000 GRD.
9. SUBMISSION OF PAPERS/ABSTRACTS
Scientists, engineers,
researchers and University Teaching and Research Personnel interested in
participating in the Conference should submit abstracts
of their papers by June 30, 2000.
Abstracts should be typed on A4 paper with 2,5 cm margins. They should clearly present, in 500 words or less, the issue addressed, the methodology and the empirical data used, indicative conclusions and main bibliographical references.
The paper’s title should be typed with center justification on the top of the first page. The name and title/position of each author and their contact address(es) should follow.
Authors whose abstracts are approved by the Conference Scientific Committee will be notified by November 30, 2000 to submit the full text of their papers by the final deadline of March 30, 2001, according to the guidelines which will be sent.
Deadlines will be kept rigorously and only papers approved by the Scientific Committee will be published in the Conference Proceedings.
