SUMMARY / RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The Research activities of the Laboratory focus on Planning Methodology and Space Regulation on national, regional and local level. The Laboratory is involved with basic and applied research, publications, supporting Ph.D dissertations in the following research fields:

  • Sustainable Urban and Regional Development: Socio-Economic and Ennvironmental Perspective.
  • Evaluation of Development and Planning Policies.
  • Spatial, Socio-Economic and Cultural Aspects of Development at the Urban and Regional Level.
  • Restructuring of Rural Space. Social, Spatial and Environmental Issues.
  • Restructuring of Manufacturing Production, Socio-Spatial Impact.
  • Key Sectors, Spatial Differentiation and Temporal changes.
  • Sectoral Interrelationships and Local Economies.
  • Spatial Organisation of Small and Medium Sized Enteprises, Environmental Issues.
  • Sustainability of Development and Productive Processes.
  • Delineation of Geographic Areas, Typologies of Socio-Spatial Clusters.

In addition the Laboratory has undertaken work on specific policy areas including the evaluation of the effectiveness of regional policy incentives, the interrelationships of urban planning policies and the development of the productive base at the local level (cf. appendix), the scope effectiveness of urban design in contemporary urban space.

The research activities of the Laboratory provide theoretical insights and practical policy conclusions which feed the educational programme of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning both within the established curriculum and through specialised seminars and lectures.

 

CONSULTANCY / COOPERATIONS

Based on research findings the unit provides services for the public and private sectors, i.e. the Ministry of Regional Planning and the Environment,Hellenic Organisation of Small and Medium sized Industries and Handicrafts (EOMMEX), Local Goverment Organizations, Chambers of Industry and Commerse, High Technology Greek Industries.

The Faculty members and Postgraduate fellows of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning participate in the research activities of the Lamboratory. Faculty members and Research staff of other Departments of the National Technical University of Athens, Faculty members and Researcher staff of Athens University, the University of the Aegean, the University of Thessaly, the Institute of Urban and Rural Sociology of the National Centre of Social Research, as well as other universities and research centres, participate in the Laboratory’s activities. Recent Projects include:

  • Urban Regeneration: The Municipality of Moschato (Project Director). Funded by the Municipality, in progress.
  • Second Home Development and National Settlement Policy: Socio-economic and environmental impacts (Project Director). In collaboration with the National Center for Social Research. Funded by the Ministry of Regional Planning and the Environment, in progress.
  • Adapt, Delphi (Director of NTUA Project). In collaboration with the Volos Municipal Enterprise for Urban and Construction (DEMEKAV). Funded by the EEC, in progress.
  • Restructuring the Productive Base - Spatial and Socio-Economic Impact (Project Director). Funded by the Secretariat for Research and Technology and the Municipality of Moschato, 1994-1996.
  • Space and Society: Modern and Postmodern Theoretical Debates and Practices. Graduate programme based on the research activities of the Laboratory of Planning Methodology and Space Regulation (Project Director). Funded by the Ministry of Labor and the EEC, 1995.
  • Employment quotients for the Prefactures of Achaia, Ilia, Messinia ( Project Director). Funded by the Research Secretariat NTUA, 1993-1994.
